On steel garage doors, rust starts underneath the paint where you can’t see it, usually at the bottom panel where water sits after rain. One thing worth knowing: the cheapest quote almost always means the prep got cut. A door that gets scuffed with 120-grit for 20 minutes and painted will look fine for about a year. Steel Garage Door Refinishing
We degrease with a TSP substitute, knock back any rust with a phosphoric acid treatment, then prime with a rust-inhibiting bonding primer before topcoats. We use a fine-finish airless sprayer – not a brush and roller – so you get the factory-smooth look, not lap marks.
Wood Entry Door Restoration
Stripping old failing paint first, not painting over it. We apply a penetrating oil primer to all six sides of the door before rehang. This is the step most painters skip because it means the door has to come off its hinges and stay flat for a few hours. It's worth it – cupping and delamination don't happen when the wood is properly sealed.
Fiberglass Door Painting

A single entry door is usually one full day – a morning for prep and prime, an afternoon for topcoats. A two-car garage door with significant prep work can take a day and a half. We don’t paint in direct sun above 85°F or below 50°F; both extremes cause adhesion problems.
DIY materials for a garage door run $60 to $120. Professional service runs $400 to $900. The gap is mostly labor – specifically, prep labor. If you’re willing to sand, clean, and prime correctly, DIY works fine. Most people aren’t, which is why so many re-coat jobs end up peeling by spring.
No. We paint garage doors in place. Entry doors come off the hinges when we’re doing a full restoration – it’s the only way to seal all six surfaces and prime the end grain properly.
We use 100% acrylic latex topcoats with a rust-inhibiting alkyd primer underneath. The primer bonds to bare or treated metal; the topcoat gives UV resistance and sheen. We avoid paints with a high chalk rating on any door surface.
Done correctly – proper prep, right primer, two topcoats – a steel door should go 6 to 8 years before needing repaint. Wood doors closer to 5 to 7 depending on sun exposure. A south-facing door in full sun will always degrade faster than one under a porch.
