Why Underlayment Matters More Than Most People Think
Underlayment does three things: smooths minor subfloor imperfections, controls moisture, and dampens sound. Skip it or pick the wrong type and the finish floor shows it — LVP telegraphs every ridge, laminate clicks hollow on concrete, hardwood cups over a slab without a vapor barrier.
Different flooring, different underlayment. Cork under laminate for sound. 6-mil poly under LVP on concrete for moisture. Plywood over uneven joists for flatness. Cement board under tile for rigidity. There’s no universal product. The underlayment has to match both the flooring above it and the subfloor below it — get either wrong and the floor underperforms.
That’s why floor underlayment installation isn’t an afterthought. It’s the first decision after assessing the subfloor.
Underlayment Installation Cost
Foam underlayment (basic poly or PE): $0.50–1.00/sq ft installed. Cork underlayment: $1.50–3.00/sq ft. Plywood underlayment (1/4” or 3/8” luan or birch): $2–4/sq ft. Cement board for tile: $3–5/sq ft. Self-leveling compound over uneven concrete: $3–6/sq ft depending on pour depth.
Flooring underlayment installation cost is a fraction of the total floor job, but cutting corners here multiplies problems above. A $0.30/sq ft foam pad under laminate on concrete with no moisture barrier — the core swells in six months. Spending $1.50 on cork with integrated vapor barrier saves the $8/sq ft laminate on top of it.

Cork Underlayment Installation
Cork underlayment installation under laminate, LVP, and engineered hardwood. Cork offers the best combination of sound dampening, thermal insulation, and minor imperfection leveling. We use 3mm or 6mm rolls with integrated vapor barrier on concrete subfloors. Seams taped, edges run up the wall behind baseboards.
Laminate Underlayment Installation
Laminate flooring underlayment installation in foam, cork, or rubber depending on the subfloor. Concrete gets vapor barrier — always. Plywood subfloor over a vented crawlspace still needs moisture protection in the PNW. We overlap seams 6” minimum and tape every joint. Laminate is a floating floor — the underlayment is the only thing between it and the subfloor.
Plywood Underlayment Installation
1/4” or 3/8” plywood over uneven subfloor to create a flat, stable surface. Plywood underlayment installation is standard prep for vinyl, LVP, and sheet flooring where the subfloor has ridges, seams, or patch spots. We screw every 6” on center, countersink, and fill. No staples — staple heads telegraph through vinyl.
Vinyl Floor Underlayment Installation
Vinyl floor underlayment installation on concrete and plywood subfloors. LVP with built-in pad can go direct on flat surfaces. LVP without pad or sheet vinyl needs a separate underlayment — cork, foam, or plywood depending on flatness. On concrete: 6-mil poly vapor barrier under any underlayment, seams overlapped 8” and taped.
Subfloor Leveling & Repair
Self-leveling compound on uneven concrete, plywood patches on damaged subfloor, joist shimming for flatness. Before any underlayment goes down, the surface underneath has to meet tolerance — 3/16” over 10 feet for most flooring. We measure, fix, then install.

Depends on the product. LVP with attached cork or foam pad can go direct on flat subfloor. LVP without pad needs separate underlayment for sound, comfort, and minor leveling. On concrete: vapor barrier underneath regardless. We check the specific product’s requirements — some manufacturers void the warranty without their recommended underlayment.
Cork with integrated vapor barrier. Handles moisture from below, dampens the hollow sound laminate gets on hard surfaces, and provides 1–2mm of leveling. Foam with separate 6-mil poly works too but doesn’t dampen sound as well. Never install laminate on bare concrete — moisture wicks through and swells the core.
$0.50–1.00/sq ft for foam, $1.50–3.00 for cork, $2–4 for plywood, $3–5 for cement board. It’s the cheapest layer in the floor assembly and the one that causes the most problems when skipped. We include underlayment in every flooring quote — it’s not an add-on.
Sometimes. If the foam or cork is clean, dry, flat, and intact — no compression marks, no moisture damage — it can stay for a new floating floor. But compressed foam under old laminate has lost its cushion and leveling ability. In most replacements the cost of new underlayment is small enough that starting fresh makes more sense than gambling.
