Paint applied over a greasy wall bonds to the grease, not the substrate – and grease isn’t structural. Six months later you have peeling. A TSP or degreasing wash before any primer goes on is non-negotiable, not optional prep to save time.
Second: moisture. Above the sink, around the dishwasher, near the coffee station – these areas see repeated humidity spikes. Standard drywall primer absorbs that moisture and lets it migrate behind the paint film. The result is bubbling, usually in exactly the spots that are hardest to reach with a brush.
We start every kitchen project with a surface assessment: what’s on the walls now, what condition is it in, where are the moisture zones, and what’s been cooking near the range hood for the past five years. That determines the prep sequence, not a generic checklist.
What Kitchen Painting Actually Costs
A typical kitchen painting project runs $600 to $1,800 depending on square footage, ceiling height, and how much prep the surfaces need. Cabinets are a separate line – painting cabinet boxes and doors correctly is a completely different process from painting walls, and pricing them together as “kitchen painting” is how you end up with a result that looks good for three months.
The variables that move the number: heavy grease buildup that requires two cleaning passes before primer, existing paint in poor condition that needs to be sanded back, high ceilings that require staging, or tile backsplash areas that need careful masking. One honest note on product cost: the right primer for a kitchen – a moisture – and stain-blocking alkyd or shellac-based product – costs roughly three times what a standard PVA primer costs. That difference shows up in your estimate. It also shows up in how long the job holds.

A standard kitchen – walls, ceiling, trim, no cabinets – takes one to two full days depending on size and how much prep the surfaces need. If there’s significant grease buildup or damaged drywall, add a half-day. We don’t rush the dry time between coats; cutting that short is one of the reasons repaint jobs fail early.
Satin is the practical answer for most kitchens. It cleans without scuffing, holds up to humidity better than flat or eggshell, and doesn’t look as clinical as semi-gloss on a large wall. Semi-gloss on trim and the ceiling area directly above the range. Flat paint in a kitchen is a mistake – it absorbs grease and can’t be wiped clean without taking the paint with it.
No. We paint garage doors in place. Entry doors come off the hinges when we’re doing a full restoration – it’s the only way to seal all six surfaces and prime the end grain properly.
Depends on the condition. If the existing paint is well-adhered with no peeling, bubbling, or contamination, a thorough clean and light sand is enough. If there’s any adhesion failure – peeling edges, bubbling, soft spots – those areas need to be taken back to sound substrate before anything new goes on. Painting over a failing layer just gives the failure something new to peel off of.
Done correctly – proper prep, right primer, two topcoats – a steel door should go 6 to 8 years before needing repaint. Wood doors closer to 5 to 7 depending on sun exposure. A south-facing door in full sun will always degrade faster than one under a porch.
Cabinet doors and boxes are a separate service from wall painting – different process, different materials, and a very different timeline. We do both, but we quote them separately. A cabinet painting job done correctly involves removing doors, spraying in a controlled environment, and allowing full cure time before rehang. It can’t be rushed alongside a wall repaint on the same day.
For walls: 100% acrylic satin in a kitchen-rated formulation – something with a hard cure and good scrub resistance. For trim: waterborne alkyd semi-gloss, which gives the hardness of an oil-based paint without the yellowing and the cleanup headaches. For the ceiling above cooking zones: shellac-based spot prime first, then ceiling flat or satin over the top.
Clear the countertops and remove anything from the walls. We handle the furniture moving, masking, and all the surface prep. If you have items stored in cabinets near walls we’re painting, it’s worth moving them to another room – prep work generates dust.
