Install Laminate Flooring
Laminate’s HDF core swells on water contact — where and how you install it matters. Rainwood Construction handles laminate flooring installation from subfloor prep through baseboards.

What Makes Laminate Work — and Where It Doesn’t
Laminate is a printed image layer bonded to a high-density fiberboard (HDF) core with a melamine wear surface. Scratch-resistant, fade-resistant, available in wood and stone looks that photograph well from across the room. AC3 rating handles residential traffic. AC4 or AC5 for heavy-use areas.
The limitation is water. HDF absorbs moisture. Sustained contact — a slow leak under a dishwasher, a kid’s bathroom with chronic splashing, a basement with slab moisture — swells the core and buckles the plank. Joints swell first. Once it’s in the core, there’s no drying it out. The plank is done.
That’s why the proper way to install laminate flooring starts with where: bedrooms, living rooms, offices, hallways. Not bathrooms. Not laundry rooms. Not below grade without moisture testing first.
Laminate Flooring Install Prices
Labor to install laminate flooring runs $3–6/sq ft. Material: $1–4/sq ft depending on thickness (7mm budget, 10–12mm premium), wear rating, and texture. Total installed: $5–10/sq ft. A 300 sq ft living room: $1,800–3,200. Open-plan main floor: $4,000–7,000.
Installed cost varies with subfloor condition. Flat plywood: fast, lower labor. Concrete needing moisture barrier and leveling compound: add $2–4/sq ft to prep. Old carpet removal adds $1–2/sq ft. Rainwood Construction quotes after walking the space — subfloor flatness and moisture set the real number.
OUR FLOORING SERVICES
What Rainwood Construction covers for laminate flooring installation services.
Standard Laminate Floor Install
Click-lock floating installation over foam or cork underlayment. Subfloor checked to 3/16” over 10 feet with a straightedge. 1/4” expansion gap at every wall, pipe, and fixed object — laminate expands and contracts with humidity. Do you have to remove baseboards to install laminate flooring? Yes. We pull them, install the floor, then reinstall with the gap hidden.
Remove Carpet and Install Laminate Flooring
The most common conversion we do. Rip out carpet and pad, pull tack strips and staples, assess the subfloor underneath. Plywood with staple holes and minor damage: patch, sand, lay underlayment, install. Subfloor with moisture issues or rot: fix first. We don’t cover problems with new flooring.
Install Laminate Flooring on Concrete
Basement and slab-on-grade applications. Moisture test first — calcium chloride or RH probe. Over 5 lbs/1,000 sq ft means mitigation before anything goes down. 6-mil poly vapor barrier minimum, cork or foam underlayment with integrated moisture barrier, then laminate. Skip the vapor barrier on concrete and the HDF core absorbs slab moisture within months.
nstall Laminate Flooring Over Tile
Laminate flooring over tile install works if the tile is flat, well-bonded, and grout lines aren’t too deep. We check for loose tiles and hollow spots first. Deep grout lines on textured tile need skim-coating to create a flat plane — underlayment alone won’t bridge rigid grout channels. Floor height increases at transitions — reducer strips handle the step-down.
Laminate on Stairs
Install laminate flooring on stairs requires stairnose molding at each tread edge, riser pieces cut to fit, and adhesive in addition to the click-lock — stairs can’t float. We glue and pin each piece. Nosing profile matched to the plank for a clean look.

WHY CHOOSE RAINWOOD CONSTRUCTION?
Companies that install laminate flooring fast often skip the parts that make it last — subfloor prep, moisture testing, proper expansion gaps. Rainwood Construction treats laminate like any other floor: the substrate decides the outcome.
- Subfloor flatness checked with a 10-foot straightedge before any plank goes down
- Moisture tested on every concrete and crawlspace-adjacent subfloor
- 1/4” expansion gap at every perimeter — baseboards pulled and reinstalled, not quarter-rounded over a tight fit
- Material acclimated in the room 48 hours minimum before install

Years Experience
We had an excellent experience with them on our sunroom project. The quality of the work was outstanding, they were easy to work with, and they clearly explained each step, the schedule, and key decisions (with various options to help us understand cost) along the way. Communication was solid from start to finish, and the final result looks great. Highly recommend, they are my new go to recommendation when friends ask.
Rainwood construction completed 2 projects in my home recently. The first, which was to add a bar in my family room, which when completed fit so well that it looked like it always belonged there. It came out exactly how we wanted it and we love it. The second project was to completely remodel and modernize my 1955 original kitchen. The kitchen turned out fantastic! It’s light and bright with clean lines exactly how we had envisioned it. The team was polite, competent, hard working and always cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day. They always made sure to ask how I wanted things done when there were options, making suggestions where needed and made sure I was happy with the completion of items along the way. I was very pleased with the quality of the work, plan to use them again in the future and have already recommended them!
Excellent work done ✅ I’m really impressed and looking forward working further. Recommend 👍
Anatoliy and his company, is great person to have a business with!!!
We just remodelled the entire main floor of our house; the scope included changing floors, installing new cabinets including a drop ceiling, added a custom entertainment wall, and fully upgraded the powder room, among other work such as electrical upgrades including an EV plug. We are overall very happy with the work that the team has done, satisfied with the cost, and definitely recommend them to others.
Toli did great work renovating our home and upstairs bathroom. It was a great change.

FAQ
$5–10/sq ft installed. A 200 sq ft bedroom over clean plywood: $1,200–1,800. Open-plan living area with carpet removal and concrete leveling: $4,000–7,000. Subfloor condition and carpet removal are the main variables — the laminate itself is the affordable part.
Parallel to the longest wall or toward the main light source. Running perpendicular to joists is structurally better on plywood subfloors. In hallways, always run lengthwise — perpendicular looks like railroad ties. We plan direction at the assessment based on room layout, light, and joist orientation.
Bathroom: no. Even water-resistant laminate can’t handle chronic splashing around tubs and toilets — HDF core absorbs it. Use LVP instead. Basement: possible if moisture is controlled. Slab needs testing, vapor barrier, and quality underlayment. Any sign of active moisture migration and we’ll recommend LVP.
Single bedroom: half a day. Living room with carpet removal: 1–2 days. Main floor open-plan with transitions and stair work: 2–4 days. Laminate acclimation adds 48 hours before install starts — we schedule that upfront so it doesn’t feel like a delay.
